Viewing Room: In Perfect Stillness
In perfect stillness the artist stands as he gazes upon the events of the past and the present, playfully mastering and ultimately channeling Time in his work. Alexandros Maganiotis’ sophisticated way of merging environments and figures from different eras, navigating from a personal and existential focal point to an international and timeless perspective renders his artistic style unique.
In his art, history and current affairs are entangled with his own personhood. Maganiotis integrates in his work elements ranging from an old family photograph, to a piece of literature or ancient Greek myths like the Odyssey, or cut-outs from the latest newspapers. Characteristic examples of this are artworks like “All United: stop killing us” where an iconic moment from Greece’s modern history encounters the “Black lives matter” movement or “As Much as You Can” where the delusion of Man’s grandeur is paired with references to Covid19 conspiracy theories, a poem on human dignity by Cavafy (the most distinguished Greek poet of the 20th century), and a Bavarian palace that was eventually adopted as a symbol of Disney.
